My Aspen flight was canceled — what do I do?
Deep breath. It happens here all the time, and locals know exactly what to do. Rebook by phone before you leave the gate area, then decide: wait it out in Aspen (there are worse places to be stuck) or catch a shuttle to Denver. This guide walks you through both — with the numbers you need.

If you're reading this from a gate at ASE, welcome to a very exclusive club. Aspen's airport sits at 7,800 feet with one short runway boxed in by mountains — when the wind kicks up or visibility drops, flights cancel. It's not you, it's physics. Here's what locals would tell you to do, in order.
✈️ STEP 1: REBOOK BEFORE YOU MOVE
Everyone on your flight is about to call the same airline. Beat them to it.
Call while you stand in the rebooking line — whichever answers first wins:
📞 Call United | tel:+18008648331
📞 Call American | tel:+18004337300
📞 Call Delta | tel:+18002211212
Open the airline's app too — it often shows rebooking options before the desk agent can. If your bags were checked, don't leave the airport without asking where they are. If you plan to drive to Denver instead, you need those bags back first.
🚐 STEP 2: DECIDE — WAIT OR DRIVE?
The honest local math: if the next confirmed seat out of ASE is tomorrow morning, waiting is usually the right call — morning flights are far more reliable than afternoon ones here, because the wind builds during the day. If you MUST be somewhere, Denver International is about 3.5 to 4 hours away in good conditions.
Ways to get to Denver:
Shared shuttle — Epic Mountain Express runs between Aspen/Snowmass and Denver International year-round (970-754-7433). Roaring Fork Express also serves DEN, EGE, and Grand Junction.
Private car/SUV — several local companies run 4x4 fleets exactly for canceled-flight days. Expect a premium price; expect it to be worth it in a snowstorm.
Rental car — one-way rentals from Aspen sell out fast on cancellation days. Call before you commit to this plan.
⚠️ Winter driving reality check: Colorado's traction law is active on the I-70 mountain corridor from September through May — you need snow tires, AWD, or chains. If it's snowing hard enough to cancel your flight, think hard before driving unfamiliar mountain passes at night. Check road conditions at cotrip.org before you go.
🏔️ THE EAGLE OPTION
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is about 70 miles away, sits at a lower elevation with a longer runway, and cancels far less often. United, American, Delta, and Alaska all fly there. If ASE is socked in for days, ask the airline to rebook you out of EGE and grab a shuttle or car over.
🛏️ STEP 3: IF YOU'RE STUCK OVERNIGHT
First call: the hotel you just checked out of — they know you, and they may hold your room or find you one. If you booked through a vacation rental, message your host before you leave the airport. Weather cancellations usually don't come with airline-paid hotels, so ask, but don't count on it.
Then breathe. You are stranded in Aspen. People pay a lot of money to be exactly where you're standing.
🫧 STEP 4: THE BEST WORST DAY OF YOUR TRIP
You just got handed bonus hours in one of the most beautiful towns in America. Open our map and make them count — a last soak, a farewell dinner at a place you couldn't get into earlier in the week (cancellation days shake tables loose everywhere), one more walk under the mountains. Ask Birdie & Goose. We'll point you somewhere good.
💡 PRO TIPS FOR NEXT TIME
Book the earliest flight of the day — calm morning air is your friend.
Build a buffer day before anything you truly cannot miss (weddings, cruises, closings).
Travel insurance earns its keep on this route more than almost anywhere.
Heads up for 2027: the Aspen airport will be fully CLOSED April 4 – November 19, 2027 for runway reconstruction. If you're planning that far ahead, plan on flying into Eagle (EGE) or Denver.
