How do I get to Aspen in 2027 while the airport is closed?
Aspen's airport closes completely from April 4 to November 19, 2027 for a full runway rebuild — no flights, no terminal, for 229 days. But Aspen itself is very much open, and getting here is easier than the headlines make it sound. Here's your complete plan: which airport to fly into, how to make the drive part of the trip, and why 2027 might quietly be the best-kept-secret summer to visit.

First, the facts. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) shuts down at 11pm on April 4, 2027 and reopens November 19, 2027.. reopening just in time for ski season. During those 229 days there are no commercial flights, no private aviation, and no terminal access at all. The runway is being completely rebuilt and widened to meet modern FAA standards, part of a voter-approved modernization that also kicks off construction of a brand-new terminal (opening 2029).
Now the part the headlines skip: THE TOWN IS FULLY OPEN. The restaurants, the trails, the music, the Maroon Bells, the whole glorious Aspen summer.. all of it happens exactly as always. You just arrive by road for one season, like everyone did for most of Aspen's history. Here's how.
✈️ OPTION 1: FLY INTO EAGLE (EGE) — THE LOCAL FAVORITE
Eagle County Regional Airport is about 70 miles from Aspen, roughly an hour and a half by car. It's served by United, American, Delta, and Alaska, it sits at a lower elevation with a longer runway, and honestly? It cancels less often than Aspen's airport ever did. For most travelers in 2027, this is the answer. Expect airlines to add capacity here for the season.. check routes from your home city as 2027 approaches.
✈️ OPTION 2: FLY INTO DENVER (DEN) — THE MOST FLIGHTS
Denver International has nonstops from everywhere on earth, and Aspen is about 3.5 to 4 hours away by road. The drive over Independence Pass (open in summer!) or through Glenwood Canyon is genuinely one of the most beautiful in America, build in time to stop, and the "transfer" becomes a highlight. Shared shuttles like Epic Mountain Express run between DEN and Aspen year-round, and private car services will be out in force in 2027.
✈️ OPTIONS 3 & 4: GRAND JUNCTION (GJT) AND MONTROSE (MTJ)
Both western-slope airports are in the mix, Grand Junction is about 2 to 2.5 hours away with an easy, scenic drive up I-70 and Highway 82. Fewer flights than Denver, but often calmer, cheaper, and closer. Worth a look if the routing works from your city.
🚐 THE GROUND GAME
Book your ground transfer WHEN you book your flight, not when you land, every shuttle, car service, and rental fleet in the valley will be running at full tilt in 2027, and the confirmed reservation wins. Options range from shared shuttles to private SUVs to luxury transfers. (We know the good ones, browse the map or just ask us.)
🌞 THE CONTRARIAN TAKE: 2027 IS A GIFT
Think about what this closure actually means: no private jet traffic. Fewer crowds. A summer where Aspen belongs a little more to the people who make the effort. The festivals still run, the wildflowers still explode, the trails still empty out by afternoon. The visitors who come in 2027 will get a version of Aspen that hasn't existed in decades, and the locals will be genuinely glad to see you.
